Are you on Speaking Terms with ChatGPT?
If you haven't yet experienced a voice conversation with ChatGPT, read on!
Hi, Scott Lovejoy and Brandon Goldberg here with another weekly tip for improving your life and your business with AI. Our focus for November is better prompting, so for our last November update, let’s talk…talking.
ChatGPT now has the ability to speak with you, voice to voice!
Here’s how to get this function activated and some tips on how to best use it.
WAIT, I CAN TALK WITH CHATGPT WITH MY VOICE?
Oh yes, indeed! ChatGPT recently made its voice chat feature available to all iPhone users for free, a perk previously exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. This hands-free feature maintains ChatGPT's engaging conversational style and supports multiple languages.
If you are more of a “say it out loud” thinker, it’s a great way to work with the chatbot!
Note that the chat history doesn't store audio clips, only saving text transcripts like regular ChatGPT conversations.
HOW DO I USE VOICE CHAT WITH CHATGPT?
You’ll need to be using ChatGPT via your phone, as the browser version currently does not support this. I’m an iphone user, so this is how it worked for me, but the Android process should be very similar and include the same steps.
First, fire up the ChatGPT app, log in, and hit the Headphone icon next to the speech-to-text button for some voice chat action.
Then, on the Chat with voice screen, click 'Choose a voice'. You'll see five friendly voices: Ember, Breeze, Juniper, Sky, and Cove. Give each a listen by tapping on them, and once you've found your favorite, hit 'Confirm'.
If your iPhone asks for microphone access, just tap 'OK' to head over to the ChatGPT Voice page. Wait for the 'Start speaking' prompt, then go ahead and ask away.
BIG TIP: If you need more control or feel like ChatGPT's jumping the gun on your questions, hold down the prompt while you talk, and let go when you're done. This doesn’t work as great if you are doing hands-free while driving. Hopefully OpenAI will give us more controls over how long the pause will be before ChatGPT responds, soon.
ChatGPT will whip up an answer in no time. If it's not quite what you're looking for, tap 'Tap to interrupt' to rephrase or repeat your question. To pause the chat, hit the Stop button. Want to keep going? Press Play and ask again. All done? Simply tap the X to close and your whole chat will be saved as a transcript in ChatGPT history for later.
IS VOICE TO VOICE BETTER THAN TEXT ON CHATGPT?
Let’s just say, it’s different! I’ve been finding it useful to help clarify my thoughts out loud on my morning commute. It creates a much different mindset to be able to voice ideas out loud, have them captured, analyzed, and whatever else you might need.
For chain-prompting, especially, working through thoughts in order and expanding on them goes differently when you’re speaking out loud.
We hope you enjoyed this TechWave update, we’ll see you next week! In the meantime, let us know how you’ve used ChatGPT to elevate your AI workflow!
